SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE IN LATIN AMERICA / INFRAESTRUCTURA SOSTENIBLE EN AMÉRICA LATINA

Edited by Andreas Georgoulias, Ana María Vidaurre, with Judith Rodríguez

Sustainable Infrastructure in Latin America is a bilingual publication on sustainable practices featuring research and worldwide collaborations that facilitate exchanges between academia, design and infrastructure development leaders.

Abstract:

This bilingual publication on sustainable infrastructure in Latin America represents two years of research of the Harvard University Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure with the support of the Inter-American Development Bank. Its main objective is to help identify, raise awareness and promote ways in which sustainable approaches can be used to plan, design, construct and operate infrastructure projects. It gathers essays from researchers, infrastructure experts, renowned designers, and financial institution leaders, as well as detailed assessments of 14 infrastructure projects. These projects range from airports, urban metro systems, highways systems, energy landscape infrastructure and coastal sanitation interventions. This publication is a pioneer in these subjects and context, and has been designed to better spread outstanding sustainability practices to be used as models for future projects in this fast developing region. The outcomes have emphasis on climate and environment, as well as leading practices in social impact, governance and innovation.

Mexico city is one of the most dynamic and complex metropolitan areas in the world today. Iztapalapa, located in the southeastern part of the city, is the most populous delegación (borough) with over 1.8 million inhabitants. The Flexible Leviathan studio took place in the spring sumester of 2013 at the Harvard University Gradutae School of Design. Twelve students from the departments of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Urban Planning worked to produce a vision for Iztapalapa’s Centro Oriente (East Center district), both in the local context of Iztapalapa and in metropolitan terms, thus theorizing the meaning of sustainable urbanism in large cities while also engaging the real world, local context of urban policy-making through urban planning and design intervention.
